Conventional treatments are main medical treatments which are used to treat various medical problems. Breast cancer conventional treatments include:
Chemotherapy
Radiation Therapy
Tamoxifen
Surgery
The conventional treatments mentioned above are the main ones used to treat breast cancer. They can be used either on their own or in a combination together. For example, some cancer patients are treated with both chemotherapy and Radiation Therapy. This is to ensure that there is the best possible chance of fighting the cancer.
Which Conventional Treatment You Will Receive
The type of treatment that you receive will vary depending upon a number of factors. Your age will come into it and whether you have been through the menopause or not. Obviously the older you are, the weaker you will be when fighting the condition. However usually older women develop a less aggressive form of breast cancer so that is not always the case.
The type of cancer which you have will also be a factor in which treatment you are given. Inflammatory cancer for example is rare but it is extremely aggressive and so surgery is usually required. However with most cancers Chemotherapy can be used to treat them.
How advanced the cancer has spread will also determine which treatment you are given. Sometimes in the very advanced stages of breast cancer nothing can be done and so no treatment will be offered. However in the early stages there are usually quite a few different options available to you and a combination of medication may also be given.
Another factor which influences which conventional treatment you receive is the grade of your cancer. This basically means what the cancer looks like under a microscope. You could have up to three different grades of cancer and generally they include slow growing, fast growing and average growing cancer tumours. Some conventional treatment options open to you include surgery followed by chemotherapy afterwards, especially if your grade is fast growing.
You do have some say over which treatment you are given so do not be afraid to speak up if you do not like one particular option. There are usually always alternatives and you should be able to find something which you will agree on.
Overall there are a number of conventional treatments available for breast cancer and it is important to learn more about them before you rush in and decide upon the right treatment for you.
